Exploring the Adverse Effects of Mercury Fillings

There has been a long-running debate over the safety of conventional dental amalgam fillings. Dental fillings consist of a blend (or amalgam) of mercury, copper and silver. Mercury is the main ingredient, comprising about 50% of the silver-colored amalgam fillings. There is a growing body of evidence that suggests that mercury fillings are harmful to health and can cause adverse health effects.

Mercury from amalgam may leach away from the teeth and get absorbed into other parts of the body, including your circulatory system, brain, bones and tissues. This is thought to cause mercury poisoning. Even though mercury fillings might not cause any side effects in the short-term, the mercury starts to percolate and accumulate in the body immediately after the cavities are filled with amalgam. The toxic mercury vapor drains away from amalgam daily via different routes, such as brushing, chewing, swallowing, breathing in the vapor and having hot drinks.

As the mercury vapor continues to escape from the amalgam and get absorbed into the system, a huge amount of mercury accumulates in the body which could lead to all sorts of health problems, including destruction of nerves and brain cells, Parkinson’s, learning disabilities, memory loss, autism, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

Mercury is one of the most toxic materials in existence and is known to bioaccumulate in the body of animals and people who have chronic exposure. Mercury poisoning affects cellular functions as well as various enzymes and hormonal systems. Because facial arteries are located in close proximity to the teeth, mercury poison percolates easily through the body, particularly to the brain and eyes. Percolation of mercury at the tooth’s root leads to conditions, such as oral galvanism (shocks in the teeth), periodontal disease, gingivitis, multiple root canals and even tooth loss.

Exposure to mercury vapor has also been shown to cause respiratory problems and conditions, such as chronic obstructive airway disease (COAD), emphysema, disorders of the bronchial tubes, asthma, and different eye problems, including glaucoma, corneal ulcers, eye floaters, farsightedness and nearsightedness.

In addition, mercury found in amalgam has been linked to a number of mental, reproductive, enzymatic and hormonal problems. Many people with mercury fillings have been reported to experience mental issues, such as obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD), panic attacks, schizophrenia, anxiety, depression, borderline personality disorder, and insanity of all kinds. Women have suffered serious side effects, including difficult menopause, miscarriages, problems conceiving, lupus, Grave’s disease, leaky gut syndrome, ulcerative colitis, endocrine disorders, and other hormonal/enzymatic problems developed as a result of exposure to mercury from amalgam.

Initially, these side effects are usually mild, but can become severe and widespread if they are left untreated.
